Rachel Barrera,
Magical Realism, Speculative Fiction

Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Rachel writes literary fiction that blends magical realism and speculative elements inspired by Mexican-American folklore and traditions. A childhood spent in a haunted, animal-filled home with imaginative parents inspired her lifelong love of storytelling. A first-generation college graduate with several advanced degrees, she writes about where the ordinary meets the supernatural and magical.

An active member of Las Comadres Para Las Américas, a national nonprofit that empowers Latina engagement across Latino/Hispanic communities, Rachel interviews Latino authors for the Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club—a partnership with the Association of American Publishers (AAP) dedicated to celebrating and promoting books by Latino authors.

Before focusing on fiction, Rachel honed her craft as a contributor to a fan-run unofficial website for Angel, the WB television spin-off, where she wrote episode summaries and interviews that entertained a loyal readership. Capturing her spiritual journey, Rachel penned a testimonial in Curandero Conversations: El Niño Fidencio, Shamanism and Healing Traditions of the Borderlands, edited by Antonio Zavaleta and Alberto Salinas, Jr.

Rachel primarily writes short literary fiction and is currently at work on her debut novel—a reimagining of the La Llorona myth set in the 1980s Rio Grande Valley.
